Sentence passed on Khalkhal rioters
Ardebil, Sept 11, IRNA -- Head of Ardebil Province's Justice Department Amir Sohrab-Beig said on Monday that 24 people were found guilty of taking part in riots and attacks on public buildings in the provincial town of Khalkhal and sentenced to one to five years in prison.
Some 52 people were brought to justice for involvement in riots and destruction of public properties in March in protest at a decision by the Guardians Council to annul the results of the February 18 parliamentary election in the town.
Sohrab-Beig said 28 of the accused including candidate Keikavous Khak-Nejad and the city's former governor were acquitted.
He said those convicted have 20 days to appeal so that their lawsuits can be forwarded to the provincial appeals court.
The official said the losses inflicted on the public or private properties have been estimated and the plaintiffs are entitled to seek compensation for the losses.
